Etna wine tours from Catania: winery, lava cave or sunset glass?

If wine is the reason you are going, book a tour that names the wineries and the number of wines, not one that says “tasting”. The tours that visit a cellar cost €95 to €125 and last 7 to 8 hours. The sunset tours that finish with a glass of local wine cost €75 to €80, and they are volcano walks with a drink at the end.

Why a tasting is not always wine

Etna is one of Sicily’s wine regions. Its wines have their own DOC, and the main grapes are Nerello Mascalese for the reds and Carricante for the whites, grown on volcanic soil on the slopes of the mountain. A visit to a cellar here is a different kind of outing from a walk on lava.

The trouble is that the word “tasting” appears in the titles of tours that offer very different amounts of wine. A popular tour with “tasting” in the title, the trek on Mount Etna with a lava cave and tasting, has 4.8 stars from 704 reviews and costs €58 for 7 hours. Its description promises that you “taste local delights” after walking on lava fields, exploring craters and entering a lava cave. Its booking page names honey, olive oil and Etna wine at a farm, so there is wine, but as one stop among several. It is a good trek with a local-products tasting; do not book it as a wine tour.

What the list tells you

Only two tours spell out the quantity. The first gives seven wines, two wineries, and local honey and olive oil on top. That is the one for someone who wants to learn what Etna wine tastes like. It is also the most expensive, so you are paying for the drinking and the second winery.

The full-day tour visits one winery for a tasting of four Etna wines with local products, and the half-day one promises a two-hour tasting of local wines without giving a number. The half-day listing is called half-day and lasts 7 hours, so read the booking page for the actual programme rather than the title. Its rating of 4.5 is the lowest of the six.

The Etna, wine and Alcantara tour is described as a guided trek with lunch in a winery, where wine is served with the meal but no tasting is described. It also takes you to the Alcantara gorge, which is covered in the guide to the combined tour.

The sunset tours: a drink with a view

Both sunset tours are 5 to 6 hours and focus on the mountain. One walks across lunar landscapes and lava tunnels and ends with a toast; the other explores the Etna Park Nature Reserve and ends with a glass from a local vineyard on the mountain. If you want a sunset on the volcano and a good glass at the end, they do it for €75 to €80. If you want to taste your way through a cellar, they do not. The Etna tour comparison covers how these sunset tours differ from the summit hikes.

Practical points

Drinking and driving. A real tasting means you do not drive afterwards. That is an argument for a tour with transport, not for a rental car. Check on the booking page whether pickup and drop-off in Catania are included; two of these tours, the wine tasting and food tour and the Etna, wine and Alcantara tour, are listed under “Sicily” rather than Catania.

How much you will actually drink. The number of wines is stated for only two of the six tours. For the others, ask what a “tasting” means in glasses and in time at the winery.

Food. Several of the day tours include lunch and the sunset tours include a drink, but the descriptions do not say what is on the plate. The food and wine tours category lists cooking classes and city tastings if what you want is more of the table than of the mountain.

Season. The vineyards are work sites, and a visit in harvest time or in winter will not be the same as one in June. Ask the operator what is possible on your date.

Our pick

For a first visit with a real tasting, the Etna wine tasting and food tour is the one that states most clearly what you get. For a cheaper evening with the volcano and a glass in your hand, take the sunset tour with wine tasting. If you came for Etna and want to taste something local, the trek with the lava cave is excellent value, as long as you know it is a trek.
