Etna and the Alcantara Gorges in one day from Catania: is the combined tour worth it?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

Visitors wading in a shallow river between steep green walls of dark basalt in a narrow gorge

Yes, if you have a single day and want a taste of both: the combined tour is a good sampler, not a deep visit to either place. It is the right choice for a first trip with no hiking plans. If what you really want is to walk on the high volcano, book an Etna-only tour and give the gorges a separate, shorter outing.

What the combined tours are

Two of them dominate, and they are close in price and rating but not in design.

Etna and Alcantara Gorges full-day tour with lunch8 hours€84.55 per person4.8 stars, 3,058 reviews
Mount Etna, wine and Alcantara tour with lunch8 hours€95 per person4.8 stars, 551 reviews

The first is the better-known one, and its description promises forests, volcanic craters and the gorges, with lunch. The second is described as a trek with a guide and a lunch stop at a local winery, which makes it closer to a food-and-nature day with a walk in it. Its page adds a volcanic cave visit with helmets and lamps and wine with the lunch; neither tour promises more time at the gorge.

Why the two fit together

Etna and the Alcantara are one story. The gorge is a narrow valley where lava once flowed and cooled into dark basalt walls, and the river has cut a path through them since. On a combined day you see the volcano and then what its lava left behind, and one day trip links the two.

What you give up

Eight hours is not much for two big places, and some of it goes on the road. The Etna part of a combined day is a short outing, not a summit day: the first tour’s page describes an easy walk of about 3 km on the northern slope, from 1,665 m to about 1,775 m, and the second tour’s page gives a maximum altitude of 2,000 m. If you care how high you go, compare that with the tours in the Etna tour comparison, which explains what the altitude figures mean.

The gorge part is also short. On a tour you walk in, look, wade and leave. If you want time to swim or to follow the river further, it is a half-day on its own.

The river is cold, and the season is limited

The Alcantara is cold all year. Local sources put the water at about 8 to 11 °C, so shoes that can get wet matter more than a swimsuit. Wading boots or waders can be rented at the entrance by those who want to go further into the gorge; ask your operator whether this is included or paid on the spot.

Public access to the river park is also seasonal. For 2026 the municipal park is regulated from 4 April to 31 October, with a small entrance fee of about €2 at the municipal entrance. A private botanical park next to it has its own, higher ticket. If you travel outside the season, check that the gorge walk is still in the programme. That is the first question to ask a winter booking, because the gorges are the reason many people book the combination.

Who the combined tour suits

Families with older children and anyone who wants variety: the combination works because neither half is described as a demanding hike, and lunch is part of both tours. Check the details of the walk for your group.

People who like wine or a slow day: the wine and Alcantara tour is the better pick, since the winery stop is the point and the trek is the exercise.

People who want to say they climbed Etna: book something else. A day shared with a river gorge cannot also be a full Etna day. The Etna tours from Catania are built for that, and the Etna and Taormina full-day tour, €95 for 9 hours, is the alternative if you would rather see the coast than the gorge.

Anyone with limited mobility: the gorge involves uneven ground and water. Ask the operator in advance what the walk to the river involves and whether the route can be shortened.

Before you book

Check three things on the booking page. First, what is included: both pages list lunch and the entrance to the Alcantara Gorges, but rental of waders and extra drinks are not mentioned, so ask. Second, where the tour starts and ends, and the pickup point in Catania. Third, the season of the gorge, if you are not travelling in summer. The day is long enough that a small misunderstanding about any of the three is felt for the rest of it.

For most people on one day in Sicily the full-day Etna and Alcantara tour is the answer: it is the most reviewed of the two. The other one costs €10.45 more, and that only pays off if the winery is what you came for.
