Driving from Catania to Etna South: is the trip to Rifugio Sapienza worth it?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Drive to Rifugio Sapienza yourself only if a meeting point is waiting for you there or you want the day on the mountain to be your own; if you simply want to see Etna, the pick-up tour at €59 per person gets you there more comfortably. Rifugio Sapienza sits at about 1,900 m and is the south-side visitor area where the cable car and 4x4 start. Enter “Sapienza” in the navigation, not just “Etna”.
What each option costs
With your own car and a tour that starts on the mountain: the trek to 3,000 m with cable car and 4x4 takes 5 hours and costs €55 per person, rated 4.6 stars from 4,766 reviews. For the cable car and 4x4 the operator asks, according to the description, another €45 per person, in cash at the meeting point. Together that is around €100 per person before rental and fuel.

Without taking the wheel: the Etna morning or sunset tour with pick-up and tasting costs €59 per person, takes 6 hours and has 4.8 stars from 4,437 reviews. Its description has it going into a lava cave and includes a tasting. The comparison limps in one respect: on the trek the cable car and 4x4 carry you up and you walk on at the top, while on the pick-up tour you spend the day in someone else’s vehicle.

If you drive yourself
- The road to Sapienza runs through the villages at the foot of the mountain, such as Nicolosi, and then climbs as a mountain road. Set off with a full tank and allow more time than you would for a city outing.
- Access and the cable car depend on weather and volcanic activity, and the authorities open or close parts of the mountain at short notice. Check on the morning itself rather than relying on an old report.
- Many rental contracts exclude unpaved tracks. Read the terms and stay on the asphalt.
- It is cooler up there than in Catania, so bring a jacket, and leave nothing visible in the parked car.
- The driver does not drink at a tasting. That is an argument for the pick-up tour.
Getting to Sapienza without a car
The public bus from Catania goes up in the morning and returns in the late afternoon; the ride takes around two hours. That is enough for a visit to the cable car, not for a guided hike that runs to sunset.
Our recommendation
If you only want to see Etna, take the pick-up tour. If you have a rental car for several days anyway, drive up yourself and book the trek with its meeting point on the mountain. One single Etna day does not justify the rental. Whether a car fits your trip at all is covered in Do you need a car in Catania?.
