Car hire in Catania: what are excess and deposit, and what costs extra at the counter?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 4 min read
When you compare rental cars in Catania, look first at three figures rather than the daily rate: the excess, the deposit blocked on your card at pick-up, and the fuel policy. All three sit in the rental terms of the individual offer and differ by supplier and car, so we give no amounts here, only where to look. Compare car hire in Catania and read the terms
Excess and deposit are not the same amount
The excess is what you pay yourself after damage, even when full cover (CDW) is included. CDW only limits your liability for certain kinds of damage; exclusions and the claims procedure are in the terms.
The deposit is the money the supplier blocks on your card at pick-up and releases after the return. It often follows the size of the excess, but it is a separate figure. Three things decide whether you get the keys: the card must be in the main driver’s name, its limit must cover the block, and the supplier must accept that card type for deposits. A debit card that worked for the online payment is not automatically accepted at the desk. If the terms do not say so clearly, ask in writing before you travel.
If an add-on cover works by refunding costs afterwards, the deposit at the desk stays in place anyway. Set your card limit with that in mind.
What can be added at the counter
A second driver, a child seat, a young-driver fee, a hand-over outside desk hours, a satnav: none of these has a reliable Catania price, it is in the individual offer. Reserve the child seat instead of hoping one is left, and check minimum age and licence rules. Accept or decline extras only after comparing them with what the booking already includes.
On fuel: with “full to full” you receive the car full and return it full. Under a prepaid policy the supplier charges for the fuel, usually at its own price. The offer states which one applies. If your flight lands after the desk closes, check the opening hours before you book, not at the airport.
The five minutes at hand-over
- Photograph or film the bodywork, wheels, glass, interior, fuel gauge and mileage, and have existing damage entered on the hand-over form.
- If you park on the street in town, photograph bumpers and mirrors again at return.
- Keep the fuel receipt and return slip until the deposit has been released.
Do you need a car at all?
For the old town you do not; the answer is in Do you need a car in Catania?. If the plan is Etna South, the drive to Rifugio Sapienza covers the route.
Our recommendation: book the offer whose deposit your card can carry without strain and whose excess you have read before paying, even if its daily rate is not the lowest. Compare car hire in Catania
